Walther III. (Münsterschwarzach)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Walther III. († September 13, 1374 ) was abbot of the Benedictine monastery in Münsterschwarzach from 1354 to 1374 .

Münsterschwarzach before Walther

Abbot Walther III. was already the thirty-sixth abbot who presided over the monastery in Münsterschwarzach. In the second half of the 14th century the abbey was consolidated and put on solid economic feet. At the beginning of the century, however, a dispute between two men of the same name, Konrad I and Konrad II , had the abbey heavily in debt. These were only paid back under their successors.

Life

Abbot Walther III. was, like his predecessor, part of the von Egloffstein family . He first appeared when he took office in 1354. It was sealed on December 30, 1354 on a document together with the Würzburg official. In 1362, at his instigation, a large bell was cast for the monastery church. A document of unknown date is the award of the monastery parish Münsterschwarzach to the custos Kraft von Buchheim , who was probably the later abbot Kraft. Abbot Walther III. died on September 13, 1374.

coat of arms

The family coat of arms after Scheibler

There is no personal coat of arms for Abbot Walther. However, if he was part of the noble family of the Egloffstein from what is now Upper Franconia, there was a family coat of arms. Description of the family coat of arms: In silver, a right-facing, black bear head with a red tongue; the helmet covers on the right black and silver and on the left black and gold; the coat of arms on the helmet.
