career

Meyer came into contact with the sport of basketball in Göttingen before the Second World War through Emil Göing , who had participated in the 1936 Olympic Games with a German team . In 1947 Meyer was one of the founders of the basketball department of the SV Hellas Göttingen club and headed the division from 1948. In 1969, the SSC Göttingen was formed through a merger of SV Hellas and the Göttingen swimming club . Meyer also headed the basketball department in the new club and held this position until 1977.

From 1963 to 1977 Meyer was the coach of the Göttingen men's team, which in 1966 was one of the founding clubs of the new basketball league under the name SV Hellas  . In the first Bundesliga season 1966/67 Meyer rose with the Göttingen and 1970 (now under the name SSC) again. In the 1970/71 season, the Bundesliga relegation failed again.

In 1973 Meyer led SSC Göttingen back to the Bundesliga, where they played until 1975. After relegation in 1975, he was promoted back to the top German league in 1976. In 1977 Meyer gave up the coaching position to Terry Schofield , whom he had brought on as a player in 1973 and who was not only a leading player, but also had a friendly relationship with Meyer and was also at his side in an advisory capacity. Meyer and Schofield also trained the Göttingen A-youth together.

Meyer was awarded the silver badge of honor in 1969 and the golden badge of honor by the Lower Saxony Basketball Association in 1973.

Meyer worked for Gothaer Insurance from 1950 to 1991 .
