Walton Brooks McDaniel (born March 4, 1871 in Cambridge (Massachusetts) , † September 16, 1978 in Camden (New Jersey) ) was an American classical philologist .

Life

Walton Brooks McDaniel studied at Harvard University , where he received his bachelor's degree in 1893 and his master's degree in 1894. He then deepened his studies at the Berlin University and at the Sorbonne in Paris. At Harvard he worked from 1896 to 1897 as a lecturer and wrote his dissertation on the textual criticism of the Homeric Hymns (in Latin), with which he received his Ph. D. in 1899 . In the same year he also married Alice Corinne Garlichs, with whom he had studied in Berlin.

After graduation, McDaniel taught Greek and Latin languages ​​and literature at Harvard University and Radcliffe College . In 1901 he moved to the University of Pennsylvania , where he was appointed Assistant Professor in 1903 and Full Professor of Latin Language and Litterature in 1909. His most famous student is the poet Ezra Pound , who attended McDaniel's Latin courses. From 1913 to 1935, McDaniel was an associate editor of Classical Weekly magazine . Since 1917 he was a member of the American Philosophical Society .

From 1920 to 1921 McDaniel was a visiting professor at the American Academy in Rome and was also chairman of the American Philological Association . His health deteriorated in the 1930s: in 1933 he suffered twice from pneumonia as well as from influenza and asthma . For this reason, he settled in 1937 as emeritus and went to live in retirement. In 1943 he donated a collection of Roman art objects to the university, which he named in honor of his late wife Alice Corinne McDaniel Collection . McDaniel spent his retirement in Miami and Camden, New Jersey . In 1950 he married Helen Celemia Stock, the widow of William Herbert Brown, for the second time. McDaniel died on September 16, 1978 at the age of 107, the oldest Harvard alumnus of all time.

McDaniel's research focused on everyday life in antiquity, especially sports and games. On his 100th birthday, Harvard University published Riding a Hobby in the Classical Lands .
