The wanam rainbow fish ( Glossolepis wanamensis ) is a freshwater fish that is endemic to a small lake west of Lae in northeast Papua New Guinea . It was first collected in 1975 by C. Ellway and scientifically described in 1979 by Gerald R. Allen and Patricia Kailola.

features

The males of the Wanam rainbow fish are brightly green in color, with the upper half of the body often shimmering metallic. The anal fin is very large and drawn out long. The smaller females are gray-green in color and have shorter, brown-green fins. The kind becomes about eight to ten centimeters long and four to five centimeters high.

Occurrence and endangerment

The species occurs only in the 2 to 3 km wide and up to 19 meters deep Wanam Lake . The lake is located on the southern edge above the Markham River valley in the province of Morobe , about 25 kilometers inland from Lae am Huongolf . Another rainbow fish , Chilatherina fasciata, can be found in the small lake . World icon

The fish can be found in shallow, clear, sunlit water near shore or underwater vegetation or sunken branches. The temperatures are 28 ° C and the pH values are in the range from 7.0 to 7.8. The lake's only connection to other bodies of water is a mostly dry channel to the Oomsis River.

Exotic cichlid species fished by the local population in the lake compete with the two endemic fish species and pose a threat to their survival. The Wanam rainbow fish is listed as critically endangered on the IUCN's Red List of Endangered Species .
