Wang Jianqiang

Wang Jianqiang (born April 6, 1955 ) is a former Chinese table tennis player . He played in the Bundesliga for Eintracht Frankfurt in the 1980s .

Career

Wang Jianqiang comes from the Chinese province of Guangdong and plays in the penholder style. He was Chinese runner-up in singles in 1975, champion in doubles with Li Yuxiang in 1977 and third in doubles with O Jinhui in 1980. At the 1977 World Cup he took part in the individual competition, where he was defeated by the Yugoslav Dragutin Šurbek in the round of 16 . At international championships in 1977 in Italy and 1980 in Romania he won singles and doubles in 1977 in Italy (with Li Yuxiang), 1978 in Romania (with Li Yuxiang), 1978 in England (with Liang Geliang ) and 1980 in Romania (with Chen Xinhua ). In 1978 he was ranked 23rd in the world .

In 1980 Wang Jianqiang was signed by the Bundesliga club Eintracht Frankfurt . He was the first Chinese in the German men's Bundesliga. It was not easy to get the license to play from the Chinese table tennis association; it was obtained with the help of Wolfgang Mischnick , then a member of the Eintracht Frankfurt administrative board, and the Foreign Office .

When the men's team was withdrawn from the Bundesliga at the end of the 1980/81 season, Wang Jianqiang returned to China. In 1988 he rejoined Eintracht Frankfurt, which was then fighting relegation in the 2nd Bundesliga. With his help, the league succeeded.

In the mid-1990s he played at KSG Dortelweil, and from 2001 to 2004 at TTC Langen from 2004 to 2011 in the regional league at TG Obertshausen. From 2011 to 2013 he was active in the TG Lämmerspiel in the district league.

Private

Wang Jianqiang is married with two sons. He lives in Germany.
