1 "Section 2 (1) of the main statute of the Hanseatic City of Stralsund of March 10, 2005".

A crest of Stralsund is detectable since the year 1265th The city coat of arms of Stralsund , a so-called speaking coat of arms , symbolizes the part of the name “stral” of the city on the Strelasund , which means “arrow” or “tip” in Slavic . The arrow was also used in the city seals .

    Representation on seals

The oldest verifiable seal is from 1265 and shows an arrow flying to the right and a ship, which indicates the importance of Stralsund as a port city. The representation of the seals changed slightly. In the course of time, the ship came to the fore and became more detailed, while the arrow moved into the background. On the small seals alone, in contrast to these larger ones, it appeared as a symbol of the city alone.

    Cog seal

Also on the coming of the year 1329 " Kogge nsiegel", which was used until the 19th century, this view is followed. From 1492 the white arrow on a red field (colors of the Hanseatic League ) was also shown upright, for the first time in the Saxon Chronicle . A little later the arrow also appeared in connection with a cross, which symbolizes the Christian faith.

    City arms

On December 29, 1720, Frederick I of Sweden gave the city a new coat of arms, which represented the Swedish rule that had existed over Stralsund since the joint defense of the Wallenstein siege and the Westphalian peace of 1648. His predecessor on the Swedish throne, Karl XII. , had promised the Stralsund council members that they would be raised to the nobility in 1714 while traveling through the Ottoman exile, which was associated with a new coat of arms.

The red of the Hanseatic League was replaced by the blue of Sweden and the silver cross by the golden crown from the Swedish coat of arms . Heraldic elements were also added, which turned the coat of arms into a heraldic shield. A crowned golden helmet with two outstretched blue wings that span a golden cross was placed on the shield. The helmet ornament was kept in blue and gold. Shield holders were a backward-standing golden lion (Swedish heraldic animal) with a view to the front and a red forward standing griffin (heraldic animal of Pomerania ) with a view to the rear. This coat of arms was not changed after 1815, when Stralsund fell to Prussia through the Congress of Vienna . It can still be seen today at the Stralsund town hall and in one of the official rooms there. For the sake of simplicity, mostly only the coat of arms was used.

In 1938 it was decided by the National Socialists that the Hanseatic city of Stralsund should again bear the old coat of arms of the 16th century. It has been used since then with no further changes.

    Trivia

In the music video for Joachim Witt'sThe Flood ”, an official stamp with the Stralsund coat of arms is used to mark the “boarding passes”.
