"In silver and on green ground, the city's coat of arms shows a crowned red shield between two green trees and inside a golden Gothic capital A. The city's colors are red and gold."

The coat of arms of the city of Aurich in East Friesland shows in silver on green ground between two rooted green deciduous trees a red shield crowned with a golden crown of leaves with the golden Gothic capital letter A. The colors of the city are red and gold. The official seal contains the coat of arms and the inscription "Stadt Aurich (Ostfriesland)".

City coats of arms mostly emerged from seals . On March 16, 1539 Aurich was granted city rights by Count Enno II with the right to use such a seal.

In 1736 a new and larger, more representative seal was introduced. The first coat of arms was probably created at this time. Exact times are not known. Even at that time, the golden "A" on a red background was decorated with a medieval golden royal crown . The shield was surrounded on both sides with leaves.

Standing on a green lawn, it was framed on both sides by a tree in natural colors. City seals and coats of arms are based on the decorative Rococo period (1675–1770). According to "Meyers Brockhaus-Konversationslexikon" the coat of arms appears in 1903 without a crown. The reason can also be found later in the anti-crown tendency towards the Weimar Republic .

According to the heraldist Otto Hupp from Bremer Kaffee-Handels-Aktiengesellschaft, the coat of arms is shown in the familiar colors in 1937. The crown is back, mighty and opulent compared to the first count's crown of the Cirksena . The garlands or leaves have been omitted. The crown, however, hovers over the shield.

In 1955 the crown is again on the coat of arms. With the crown on you came back to the oldest seal and the old tradition. It is a worthy presentation of the East Frisian capital and government capital. According to the main statute of the city of Aurich of October 18, 1956, it has been the current coat of arms since then.

The "A" in the Aurich coat of arms stands on a small hill. It symbolizes the Upstalsboom , which is located west of Aurich near Rahe . Originally it was a burial mound from the Bronze Age . In the Middle Ages it was the meeting place for the members of the 7 Frisian Seeland between Fly and Weser , who had joined together to form the Landfriedensbund.
