The coat of arms of Hamburg is a former German sea bathing ship . The ship of HADAG Seetouristik und Fährdienst AG , built in 1955, was the first of three ships with this name - of which the third coat of arms of Hamburg , from 1965, is the best known. It was built for the Heligoland ferry service and is now in a non-serviceable condition as Aurora in Stockton , California.

A technical feature of the first coat of arms of Hamburg and its sister ship, which was two years younger, was the diesel-electric drive. Five Maybach diesel engines with generators produced the electricity for the two electric DC traction motors with an output of 6000 hp. The Theodor Heuss and the Deutschland of the Vogelfluglinie also had a similar drive concept .

history

Coat of arms of Hamburg (1955–1962)

At Blohm & Voss (then Steinwerder industry AG ) built, it was on the route between Hamburg used and Helgoland. Due to its relatively low speed of around 17.5  knots, HADAG replaced it with a new building after just six years, the second coat of arms of Hamburg , which was faster with a speed of 21.5 knots. Due to the shorter crossing, the length of stay of day tourists on Heligoland was significantly extended.

Delos (1962–1967)

The ship was sold to Greece for £ 375,000 in late 1961 and was renamed Delos . During this time the ship made a brief appearance in the James Bond film With Love from Moscow as Ernst Stavro Blofeld's yacht (SPECTER).

Polar Star (1967-1970)

In 1967 the ship was sold to Canada and used as the Polar Star for adventure trips to the polar regions.

Pacific Star (1970–1972)

In 1970 the ship was sold to West Cruise Lines Ltd and renamed Pacific Star .

Xanadu (1972-1998)

In 1972 it was renamed Xanadu after it was taken over by Xanadu Cruises . In 1982 the ship was housed in a floating crab farm. The former coat of arms of Hamburg has not been reactivated since the end of 1982 and has been sold several times. In 1991, it was planned to be converted into a children's hospital in the Caribbean, which was not implemented either.

Faithful (1998-2009)

In 1998 the name Faithful appeared . After another sale in 2003, it was to be renamed Xanadu2 , but the old name remained.

Aurora (since 2009)

On September 20, 2005, the ship arrived in a very poor condition under the name Faithful in tow at a shipyard in Alameda near San Francisco . The name change to Aurora was supposed to take place there, but this was not done for the time being. In 2008 the Faithful was towed to Rio Vista . It was still there in December 2009. In the meantime, there were plans to sink it as an artificial reef.

In September 2009 the Faithful was renamed Aurora and the ship has been restored since then. The ship was first brought to San Francisco to be further repaired there with the provisional goal of using it as a restaurant and getting it back on the road in the medium term. The ship was even given a new, white paint job, shortly before it was still in very poor condition. However, there were problems with the Port Authority of San Francisco, which is why the ship was moved to a berth in the city of Stockton some time later. Restoration efforts are continuing at this somewhat remote site in the river delta area to the northeast of San Francisco Bay.

Sister ships

Colorful cow

The Bunte Kuh was launched in 1957 at the Norderwerft in Hamburg as the sister ship of the Hamburg coat of arms . It got its name after Simon von Utrecht's legendary command ship Bunte Kuh , which hunted down the pirate Klaus Störtebeker around 1401. She was in service in Cuxhaven to Helgoland until 1962 . The ship was then sold to Greece as the Stella Solaris . After the ship was converted into the yacht Naief for the Sheikh of Qatar in 1971 , the track of this ship is lost.
