From the stories of an anonymous Andalusian geographer (12th century) it emerges that the island got its name from the trees growing only on this island, on which human bodies grow.

These are described as extremely beautiful and desirable. The process of growing begins in March and ends on the last day of April . In June these bodies, which are described as soulless , fall down from this tree with the cry Waq-Waq , but they cannot move because they have no bones. They are then buried because of the smell of decay.
