War for the Overworld is a real-time strategy game for Windows , Mac OS and Linux , which is developed by Subterranean Games. The game is mainly inspired by Dungeon Keeper , but Overlord , Evil Genius and StarCraft were also named as role models. Thanks to a financing campaign via the crowdfunding platform Kickstarter , the game project received widespread public attention and media coverage even before it was published.

Gameplay

Screenshot of a Kickstarter demo of War for the Overworld : Overview of a dungeon, divided into rooms which are connected by a corridor system. The player expands his dungeon.

In the game, the player as a so-called "Underlord" takes on the role of a ruler over an underground realm ( dungeon ). The primary task is to build up and expand the dungeon in order to be able to defeat hostile heroes with traps and creatures. The player typically starts with a barely or not fully developed room and corridor system and has the task of designing the structure and design of the dungeon himself. The game is played in real time ; H. the player must make quick decisions while battles take place between his creatures and the heroes. Armies of subordinate creatures can be trained and led, spells to harm enemies or to support one's own troops are available. The game is micromanagement- heavy. a. A supply of food, gold and entertainment for the subordinates is ensured, otherwise they will become dissatisfied or even leave the dungeon.

The game is a campaign, a sandbox mode and online - multiplayer mode include.

history

Concept and funding

Subterranean Games was mainly founded by Dungeon Keeper fans from the modding community to create Dungeon Keeper 3: War for the Overworld , which was still conceptualized by Bullfrog Productions , but never realized . Since the copyrights are held by the US publisher Electronic Arts , there are no direct references to Dungeon Keeper , and a corresponding license was not acquired.

On November 29, 2012, Subterranean Games launched a Kickstarter campaign for War for the Overworld with the aim of raising £ 150,000 by January 3, 2013. For every £ 75,000 of additional capital, the developers promised to implement one of twelve “Flex Goals” to choose from. These expansion goals included additional game content, multiplayer modes and a dungeon crawler mode, in which the player can interact as a hero in the scenarios. In return, supporters of the campaign received promises of rewards, the scope of which was dependent on the amount of the financial contribution. The rewards included access to early beta versions of the game, a downloadable version of the finished game, or the game's soundtrack. The supported platforms for the game release originally targeted for August 30, 2013 included Microsoft Windows , Mac OS and Linux . A modding tool called "Dungeoneer" is to be supplied with the game, with which maps, game campaigns and new game modes can be created. During the course of the campaign, an early demo version was expanded and made available for download, which introduces creatures, artwork and basic game design.

On December 22, 2012, Dungeon Keeper inventor Peter Molyneux extolled Subterranean Games' dedication and approach to creating the game and urged fans of both of his games to support the Kickstarter campaign. On January 3, 2013, the campaign was successfully concluded with £ 211,371. At the end of the campaign, a PayPal- based payment option was also set up, with which supporters could contribute to achieving the additional goals until the game was released.

Delay in the course of development

As early as May 2013, with the help of Steam's Early Access Program, interested players were given access to early development versions of the game for a fee. However, the originally announced release date at the end of 2013 could not be kept, the main reason given by Subterranean Games was an underestimation of the development effort. On the part of the developer, the completion was stated in February 2014 with an unspecified publication period 2014.

publication

The publication was repeatedly postponed, the game was finally published on April 2, 2015. The game is distributed via Steam and, without digital rights management , also via GOG.com for Windows (7, 8, 10) and Linux . In the meantime, six extensions have appeared as downloadable content .
