Ward is a settlement in the Marlborough District on the South Island of New Zealand .
Origin of name
The settlement was named after Joseph George Ward , who was Prime Minister of New Zealand twice .
geography
The settlement is located around 37 km south-southeast of Blenheim and around 10 km south of Lake Grassmere between various small creeks that flow a good 2 km east into the Flaxbourne River . The closest place is Seddon , about 18 km north. The New Zealand State Highway 1 and the railway line of the South Island Main Trunk Railway run through the settlement, but the latter has no stopping point in the settlement. This is located in Seddon to the north .
history
Ward was once part of the so-called Flaxbourne Station , a 29,000 hectare farm that was built in 1847 by the settlers Charles Clifford and Aloysiua Weld on the Flaxbourne River for sheep breeding. In 1879 over 60,000 sheep are said to have grazed on this farm.

Education
With the Ward School, the settlement has a primary school with grades 1 to 8. In 2014, 33 students attended the school.
