life and work

Warlimpirrnga Tjapaltjarri was born in the Western Desert cultural area as the oldest of seven children. He belongs to the Pintupi Nine , who traditionally lived as hunters and gatherers completely isolated from the outside world near Lake Mackay . In 1984 the group (two "mothers", four sons and three daughters) came into contact with other Aborigines . Their language is that of the Pintupi and they settled with the tribe in the Kiwirrkura area .

Influenced by the contact with modern Australia, the artists' colony in Kintore , the Papunya Tula Artist Cooperative and under the influence of Geoffrey Bardon , Warlimpirrnga began to paint with acrylic on canvas in 1987. He paints the land of the Tingari, a people from the myths of the dream time, in an unmistakably minimalist style. In 2012 his works were exhibited at dOCUMENTA (13) in Kassel. His brothers Walala and Tamlik, (called Thomas) are also famous artists. They are called "The Last Nomads" in Australia.
