Tribal area of the Warnower Warnabi around the year 1000

The Warnower belonged to the West Slavic tribal association of the Abodrites , in which they played no leading role. The tribe settled in Gau Warnabi , in the area of the Warnow River in Mecklenburg . A cultural center was created for the Warnowern in the 2nd half of the 9th century through a hall (which was probably a temple or a sanctuary ) on an island in the Groß Radener See near the Groß Raden castle a few kilometers north of the Small town of Sternberg . The Warnower was first mentioned by Adam von Bremen as Warnabi . The castle wall near Friedrichsruhe , district of Ludwigslust-Parchim , is assumed to be the tribal center not attested to by written sources . A landscape Warnowe is mentioned in 1171 and 1186.
