Warren Ernest Cooper , QSO (born February 21, 1933 in Dunedin ) is a New Zealand politician .

biography

After finishing school, he worked as a retailer and later as a motel manager. He began his political career as a member of the New Zealand National Party (NP) in local politics and was first from 1968 to 1975 mayor (Mayor) of Queenstown .

In 1975 he was a candidate of the NP with the first election to the House of Representatives (New Zealand House of Representatives) , in which he first represented the constituency of Otago Central and then from 1978 to 1996 the constituency of Otago .

Cooper was initially Minister of Tourism in the government of Prime Minister Robert Muldoon between 1978 and 1981 and was appointed Foreign Minister of New Zealand by Muldoon on December 11, 1981 during a government reshuffle and held this position until the end of Muldoon's term on July 26 1984 held.

After the New Zealand National Party won again, Prime Minister Jim Bolger appointed him Minister of Defense in his cabinet in November 1990 . After a reshuffle, he, in 1993, the Office of the Minister of the Interior (Internal Affairs Minister). In 1996 he left the government. Most recently he was Mayor of Queenstown again from 1995 to 2001.

For his services he was awarded the Queen's Service Order .
