The Warzenibis ( Pseudibis papillosa ) is a species of bird in the family of ibises and spoonbills .

It occurs in Southeast Asia , in Pakistan , Nepal and India south to Tamil Nadu and east to Bangladesh .

Its distribution area includes semi-arid lowlands, meadows, grassy or fallow areas, but also river banks.

Appearance

The warty ibis is 60–68 cm tall, the wingspan is 90–115 cm. The crown and neck are bright red in mature birds. The rest of the bird is black with white spots on the shoulder feathers. The legs are brick-colored. The long curlew-like beak is gray, towards the tip light gray. Young birds are uniformly dull brown.

The call of the male is described as loud nasal calling, mostly near the nest, but also in flight.

Way of life

The food consists of frogs , earthworms , beetles and their larvae , other insects , including scorpions , crustaceans , lizards .

The breeding season is between March and October in northern India and between January and April in Nepal. The nest is a large bowl made of twigs, covered with straw and feathers, usually high in the trees as a single nest, not in a breeding colony. 2–4 light to pale green eggs are laid.

Danger

The warty ibis is not considered to be endangered ( Least Concern ).
