Wash house (Lauris)
The public wash house or Lavoir public of the village Lauris , in the French department Vaucluse , is in the center, on the rue sous les Campanes and the rue du Lavoir . It is fed by a tributary of the Durance , the river that runs south of Lauris.
history
Its construction was part of the policy after the French Revolution to improve public hygiene . In the 19th century, the covered washing area was built on the former cemetery. During the Ancien Régime , this was the cemetery of the Notre-Dame-de-Purification church, which is right next to the wash house.
The public wash house was a meeting point in the village. There are three basins: one for rinsing the laundry, a slightly inclined basin for beating the laundry and one for rinsing and drying. In 1989 the wash house, which was no longer in use, was recognized as a monument historique . It is part of the picturesque aspect of the village with its old houses, the castle and the squares with fountains such as the B. the Fontaine du Canard .
More wash houses
The village has two other public wash houses that are not listed. The washing area in rue de la Bonne Fontaine was then reserved for sick villagers. The other wash house is outside the village.
