The moated castle Alt Barenaue is a moated castle in Kalkriese in the municipality of Bramsche in the district of Osnabrück in Lower Saxony . The Niederungsburg is located on a sand island in the Great Moor at the foot of the Kalkrieser Berg .

It was built in the 13th century by the Lords of Bar . The first documentary mentions are from the years 1305 and 1341 ( "castro dicto tor bernowe" ). The owners moved to the newly built Neu Barenaue Castle around 1862 .

The gate building from 1689 with an octagonal lattice tower in the upper part is one of the older buildings. The library and the old judicial linden tree should also be emphasized. However, the facility with a residential building and stables can only be viewed from the outside.
