Neu Barenaue Castle

The von Bar family had the two-storey, two-storey manor house built in the neo-Romanesque style below the Kalkrieser Berg by the Hanoverian architect Hermann Hunaeus in the English manorial country house style between 1857 and 1862 . She previously lived in the Alt Barenaue moated castle , which is now on the other side of the Mittelland Canal .

history

The von Bar family owned a collection of Roman coins that farmers had found in the area. On behalf of Theodor Mommsen , the Berlin numismatist Julius Menadier recorded 1 aureus , 179 denarii and 2 aces in 1884 . Mommsen then suspected the location of the Varus Battle in the Kalkrieser-Niewedder Senke on the Kalkrieser Berg. The collection was lost during the occupation by Allied troops in 1945.

Todays use

Today the house is divided into six individual households, some of which are inhabited by the von Bar family. The sights near the castle include a 2,000 m², wildly romantic garden with old trees that are now used privately.
