Julius Menadier

Julius Menadier (born August 7, 1854 in Gandersheim , † January 12, 1939 in Berlin ) was a German numismatist . His focus was on the field of numismatics of the Middle Ages.

After visiting the Martino-Katharineum Braunschweig and studying ancient history in Göttingen (1874) and Berlin (until 1878), he received his doctorate there in 1880.

He was then entrusted with the organization of the coin collection at the Ducal Museum in Braunschweig (today: Herzog Anton Ulrich Museum ). In 1884 he began as a trainee at the Münzkabinett Berlin , in 1885 he became assistant director there, from 1898 to 1921 he was its director, until 1919 together with Heinrich Dressel . During his work at the cabinet, the collection was expanded considerably. In his publications he primarily used his knowledge of the written tradition of the Middle Ages, which sometimes led him to dogmatism towards archaeological sources. So he fought polemical essay battles with another connoisseur of medieval numismatics, Hermann Dannenberg . The issue is explained in the article Sachsenpfennig-Otto-Adelheid-Pfennig .

His children Karl (1889–1914) and Dorothea (1891–19 ??) were also active in numismatics.
