Richard Gaettens

Hermann Ludwig Richard Gaettens (born March 14, 1886 in Hagenow ; † April 26, 1965 in Heidelberg ) was a German chemist and numismatist .

life and work

Richard Gaettens was the son of a lawyer. He attended the Realgymnasium Rostock , passed the Abitur there, studied chemistry, physics, mineralogy and geology at the universities of Rostock and Heidelberg from 1904 to 1907 and was awarded a Dr. phil. PhD . From 1910 he worked as a chemistry assistant in Halle (Saale) .

Gaettens turned to numismatics early on . He was the secretary and cashier of the Numismatic Society founded in Rostock in 1908 and from 1912 a partner in the coin dealership of his friend Albert Riechmann as well as Riechmann's first secretary and deputy in the Halle numismatic society. Gaettens was editor of the magazine Archive for Medal and Plaque Studies published from 1913 . In 1923 he initiated the series of publications on coin studies and published several auction catalogs. His numismatic research and his coin and medal collection made him known in professional circles. He bought the Mecklenburg series of several collections and most recently owned the most extensive private collection of Mecklenburg coins and medals. In 1931 his Mecklenburg collection with over 3400 coins was auctioned in Berlin. Gaettens started another collection of medieval coins, which was also auctioned in 1959/1960. His third collection consisted of art medals and plaques.

Richard Gaettens was co-author of the Handbuch der Münzkunde for Central and Northern Europe and put together an auction catalog of coins and medals from Mecklenburg .
