Life

After studying history, historical auxiliary sciences, English and folklore at the University of Münster , Klüßendorf joined the archive service in 1972 , initially in Detmold . He remained an archivist until 1980 , has worked at the Hessian State Archives in Marburg since 1974 and as a lecturer, from 1980 to 1999 as a lecturer at the Marburg Archive School . From 1980 to 2006 he worked as an academic senior counselor at the Hessian State Office for Historical Regional Studies in Marburg, where he was responsible for “state numismatics” (particularly processing found coins). In 1986 he completed his habilitation in this subject. In 1992 he became an adjunct professor for numismatics and monetary history at the Philipps University of Marburg , where he worked from 1980 to 2010, initially as a lecturer and later as a private lecturer or adjunct professor.

From 1980 to 2006 Klüßendorf was the representative of the State of Hesse in the Numismatic Commission of the States in the Federal Republic of Germany and from 1991 to 1999 its second chairman. He is a member of several historical commissions, including the Historical Commission for Mecklenburg, which he co-founded in 1990 . His scientific achievement was awarded the honorary prize of the Society for International Monetary History in 1996 and the Carl Friedrich Gauß Medal of the Braunschweigische Wissenschaftliche Gesellschaft in 2003. His commitment to German unity should be emphasized, not only in the narrower area of his subjects. In this context, he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class (2007).

The pragmatic concerns formulated by Klüßendorf in 1992 against the treasure shelf , with which most federal states claim ownership of archaeological finds in deviation from the Civil Code , received widespread attention . Since 2002, Klüßendorf has been working in ICOMON, the International Committee of Money and Banking Museums, within the framework of the International Council of Museums (ICOM) and has been particularly involved with lectures at the annual conferences in China (2002, 2010) and South Korea (2004).

The scientific focus of Klüßendorf is the research of the history of coins and money in the Middle Ages and the modern era, whereby many of Klüßendorf's numerous works are characterized by intensive evaluation of archival sources and their integration into historical regional studies. The outstanding feature of its scientific conception is the integration of numismatics into general history.

The dissertation was on "Studies on currency and economy on the Lower Rhine from the end of the period of the regional pfennig to the coin agreement of 1357 " (Bonn 1974). The habilitation thesis was published as early as 1984 under the title " Paper money and national debt in the Principality of Waldeck 1848–1890".
