Anton Diederich (born November 16, 1939 in Eveshausen ) is a German historian and archivist . He is considered a leading German researcher in the field of sealing technology .

Life

Anton Diederich studied history , Latin , historical auxiliary sciences and philosophy at the Universities of Bonn and Cologne . Since 1959 he has been a member of the Catholic student association KDSt.V. Alania Bonn. In 1965 he received his doctorate in Bonn with a thesis on the St. Florin Monastery in Koblenz, which was later published in the Studies on Germania sacra , and then completed his training as a senior archive service. As an archivist, Diederich was initially employed at the Historical Archives of the City of Cologne , and from 1974 as City Archives Director under the direction of Hugo Stehkämpers .

From 1979 until his retirement in 2004, Diederich was the first non-cleric in this position to head the historical archive of the Archdiocese of Cologne . During this time, the archive inventory grew from 1,150 meters of shelving to well over five kilometers of shelving.

From 1975 to 2004, Diederich also held a teaching position for history at the University of Cologne with a special focus on historical auxiliary sciences. In 1985 he was appointed honorary professor by the University of Cologne . His wife is the granddaughter of the Bonn architect Wilhelm Weinreis (1872–1906), according to whose plans the Guier mausoleum, now used as a cemetery chapel, was built.

Researches

Diederich's academic work includes aspects of legal, ecclesiastical and regional history (especially of the Rhineland) as well as the history of Cologne and its sources. In 1980, together with the Cologne cathedral builder Arnold Wolff, he published the commemorative publication for the hundredth anniversary of the completion of Cologne Cathedral .

In numerous of his publications, Diederich devotes himself to sphragistics , the historical and art-historical source value of medieval and early modern seals and their archival-appropriate storage and indexing, and thus to a discipline of historical auxiliary sciences that has recently been neglected by German-speaking research, exemplarily, but also spanning epochs and programmatically ; Diederich is currently the leading German sphragistics specialist. During Diederich's time as head of the historical archive of the Archdiocese of Cologne, the seal collection there was expanded to over 46,000 seal impressions in 1984 through the purchase of around 30,000 pieces from the Stephan Beissels collection . In 2005, Diederich and Joachim Oepen published an anthology on the status and perspectives of research in the historical auxiliary sciences, in which he himself presented sphragistics as a sub-discipline.
