Heinrich Dressel
Heinrich Dressel (born June 16, 1845 in Rome , † July 17, 1920 in Teisendorf ) was a German epigraphist and numismatist .
Career
Dressel was a student of Theodor Mommsen and initially mainly worked in the field of epigraphy. From 1885 he worked at the Münzkabinett Berlin , in 1886 he became assistant director, from 1898 to 1919 he was director together with Julius Menadier . On April 24, 1902 he became a member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences , from 1902 to 1911 he was head of the Greek Mint of the Academy.
The naming of numerous amphorae forms from the Roman Empire goes back to Heinrich Dressel and his work for the Corpus Inscriptionum Latinarum . He edited the urban Roman inscriptions, including numerous small inscriptions on amphorae from Monte Testaccio .
