Alfred von Sallet begins the preface to the first edition with the words:
"Various circumstances made it desirable that a numismatic magazine should appear in Berlin, which primarily deals with classical antiquity , but also with the Middle Ages and the sixteenth century , without too narrow limits."
Following this, the articles are listed in different categories in the table of contents, antiquity, the Middle Ages, etc., smaller communications, literature, necrologist . The number of articles varies, with an average of around 20 per issue. The number of pages is also very different, but it is usually around 300 to 400 per year. In the appendix of each edition there are various tables with illustrations. In the years 1879 to 1909, negotiations of the Numismatic Society in Berlin were also printed after the plates .
