Alfred von Sallet begins the preface to the first edition with the words:

"Various circumstances made it desirable that a numismatic magazine should appear in Berlin, which primarily deals with classical antiquity , but also with the Middle Ages and the sixteenth century , without too narrow limits."

Following this, the articles are listed in different categories in the table of contents, antiquity, the Middle Ages, etc., smaller communications, literature, necrologist .
