Eduard Julius Theodor Friedländer (born June 25, 1813 in Berlin ; † April 4, 1884 there ) was a German numismatist .

Life

Friedländer was the son of the private scholar and coin collector Benoni Friedländer and his wife Rebecca von Halle, daughter of the Berlin banker Joel Samuel von Halle and his wife Edel (Adelaide) Levy. Julius Friedländer was baptized Protestant together with his siblings in 1818. He attended the Gymnasium zum Grauen Kloster in Berlin and studied medicine, archeology and history at the universities of Bonn and Berlin . In Bonn he was a member of the Corps Borussia . In 1838 and 1839 he toured Italy . In 1840, after completing his doctorate , Friedländer received an (initially unpaid) job at the royal collection of ancient coins in Berlin. Through considerable acquisitions during recent trips to Italy together with Theodor Mommsen (1844–47), he laid the foundation for the current importance of the coin cabinet in Berlin's Bode Museum . In 1858 he became head of the department for ancient coins and in 1868 director of the united coin cabinet. As such he made himself through purchases of entire collections (such as that of his father Benoni Friedländer in 1861, that of General Fox in London in 1873 and Count Anton von Prokesch-Osten in Graz 1873-1875), through publications, appropriate arrangement and utilization of the collected treasures earned. From 1872 he was a full member of the Berlin Academy of Sciences . His grave was in the St. Marien and St. Nikolai Cemetery I in the Berlin district of Prenzlauer Berg .
