The Niquía hydropower plant (Spanish: Central hidroeléctrica Niquía ) is located near the city of Medellín in central northern Colombia in the Antioquia department .
The hydropower plant is located in the Colombian Central Cordillera near Bello , a northern suburb of Medellín, on the northern slope of the river valley of the Río Medellín , the Valle de Aburrá . The power plant, which went into operation in 1993, has a unit with a vertically directed 19 MW Pelton turbine with 5 nozzles. Preliminary work has been done for two future power plant units. The power plant is supplied with water from the Riogrande II reservoir , which is located on the Río Grande river . This reaches the power plant via a 16.4 km long pipeline. The gross fall height is 420.5 m. The expansion water volume is 6.09 m³ / s. Below the power plant, the water is directed southwards via a 4.1 km long pipeline (1.6 m diameter), crossing the Rìo Medellín river, to the Manantiales waterworks . This is responsible for the drinking water supply of Medellín.
