The Riesau watermill appears for the first time in old documents from the cathedral chapter of Osnabrück as Hof Riesau or as 'domus Resoe' in Bockwiede / Balkum, at that time part of the parish of Ueffeln .

The farm has been in family ownership since 1240. The first watermill belonging to the farm was probably founded in 1441. Today's watermill with pond was relocated 300 meters from the old to the current location in 1767 with the consent of the Bishop of Osnabrück and enlarged. The watermill operated until the late 1950s. In 1976 the local history association Ueffeln-Balkum took over the mill. The restoration work was carried out by him from 1977 to 1987.

In 2000 the mill pond that feeds the Riesau watermill had to be sealed. The renovation had become necessary because water seeped through below the pond brine and threatened the foundation of the main building.

The watermill is a station on the Bramgau Route , a holiday route .
