Water hives

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Aquagenic urticaria , Wasserurtikaria or Aquagenic urticaria is a form of hives that occurs after contact with water. It was first described by Shelley and Rawnsley in 1964. It is very rare; According to a British tabloid, there are only 35 known diseases worldwide. Water hives are not an allergic reaction to water. The context in which they emerged is not yet fully understood. Young adults are particularly affected. It is not to be confused with cholinergic urticaria caused by sweat, cold contact urticaria and aquagenic pruritus .

The symptoms can be compared to those of contact with nettles . Affected people show small whitish papules after about 15 minutes after touching the water (rain, sea water, shower) , which can persist for up to two hours and itch. The diagnosis is confirmed by applying a compress soaked in water at body temperature. For treatment are antihistamines administered.

Although most patients are isolated cases, familial occurrences have also been observed and a genetic predisposition is suspected on the basis of a twin examination .
