The Wasserstraße is a street in Düsseldorf - Unterbilk .

history

On July 3, 1854, the waterway was formally established as part of a city expansion plan. Since the Linke Düssel crosses the waterway before it flows into the Kaiserteich , a simple road underpass was created for this in 1857. Since, following a cabinet order from Berlin in 1831, new buildings in the area of the new parks were exempt from property tax for 25 years, the construction of buildings on the waterway began at the end of the 1850s. In the course of the expansion of the road and development, the simple crossing from the Düssel was replaced by a solid new bridge in 1887.

The street is still predominantly characterized by historical buildings. Most of them are late classicist / neo-baroque buildings from the second half of the 19th century, which are listed buildings. The initially open Düssel was "drilled" around 1900 in the area of the waterway up to the confluence with the Kaiserteich. Currently this overbuilding has been largely lifted and the stream bed, which is now open again, has been renatured.

description

The waterway forms the western boundary of the area around the Schwanenspiegel / Kaiserteich. The location on the park led to an upper-class three-storey residential development, which differs significantly from the Wilhelminian-style buildings in the Unterbilk area. In the south of the city, the Schwanenspiegel and Kaiserteich lakes were created from 1842 onwards. In their conception they are similar to the land crown in the courtyard garden . Both ponds consist of two lakes of the same size. They were connected by a bridge at a narrow point.
