The Ahrensbök water tower is located in the municipality of Ahrensbök in the Ostholstein district , Schleswig-Holstein . It is the youngest water tower in Schleswig-Holstein. It is located a little outside the town limits of Ahrensbök, around 60 meters from the federal road 432 (Segeberger Chaussee, section Ahrensbök - Bad Segeberg ).
The construction
The 45 m high water tower was built on a slight hill and put into operation in 1976. It was built from reinforced / prestressed concrete and consists of an octagonal column on which the flat, also octagonal, mushroom-like elevated tank is located. At the top, the building is completed by a pulpit-like attachment.
The water tower was built at a time when pumps and near-earth flat tanks - at least in the flat regions of northern Germany, to which the area around Ahrensbök belongs - made its construction superfluous. The water tower is in operation. It is visible from afar and, due to its eye-catching shape, is a distinctive landmark.
History of the Ahrensböker water supply
The community of Ahrensbök opened two public wells in 1858 to supplement the private wells of homeowners and farmers. Three more wells were added in 1883. After a typhus epidemic in 1902, a hygienic water supply was discussed, but it was not until 1911 to 1912 that the community built a modern waterworks . This included a water tower on the Mösberg.
The old tower was probably demolished after the community became a member of the Ostholstein association in 1964 . The Zweckverband supplies an area that stretches from Bosau to Fehmarn and has 25,000 inhabitants with 2 million m³ of water a year.
