The Bebra water tower is a landmark in the Hessian city of Bebra . The water tower of the Klönne type was completed in 1910 to supply the railways with service water according to plans by the Prussian State Railways .

history

The expansion of the railway network and operations, in particular the western connection via Bebra, was taken over by Prussia on April 1, 1867 with the possibilities of the Prussian Railway Act (prEG) from the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Nordbahn-Gesellschaft and transferred the railway operations to the Prussian State Railways , which thus the Gained responsibility for the Bebra train station . For the increasing railway operation with steam locomotives , a service water supply had to be established by the railway at Bebra station. In 1952, the water supply system was completely overhauled and served up to 1984 to supply water to railway operations and, in recent years, only to railway station operations.

technology

The building is a conical tower substructure made of masonry with integrated masonry supports for load bearing, above which a steel container with a belt-like, circumferential walkway for maintenance work on the container is placed. On the tower there is a container for holding process water that was taken from the Fulda .

The steel container is a so-called Barkhausen container with a size of approx. 500 cubic meters and was designed in the shape of a sphere. With such a structurally favorable design, it offered the possibility of filling up from a pressurized water pipe in a short time. The spherical container is called Klönne type. The engineer August Klönne developed this construction method from 1886 and manufactured many of these containers with his Dortmund steel construction company Aug. Klönne from 1906 and made a name for himself beyond Germany in other steel construction sectors.

Change of use

Due to the discontinuation of the steam locomotive operation and other water supply to the station, the Bebra water tower threatened to be demolished in 1984, the function of which was no longer required. The city of Bebra took over the tower from the railway in 1985, which was then renovated - also with funds from the state and federal government. The renovation was completed in 1988 and the tower was preserved as a protected industrial monument and as a symbol of the city of Bebra.

When the renovation was completed, the tower was dedicated to a railway museum with a circulating museum railway.
