The water tower of Heide in Holstein is located at the east pool in a park, northeast of the market square. The restored tower is a symbol of the city. With 4 meters it towers over the church tower of Heide.
Building
The tower was built in 1903. Its architectural design was designed by the renowned Kiel architect Wilhelm Voigt . The conically tapering brick shaft is clad with granite in the base zone . A wreath of blind arcades forms the transition to the brick masonry. Another wreath of arcades is located below the tower head, which originally contained an Intze-1 container with a capacity of 225 m³.
The projecting casing of the container is a waterproof reinforced concrete construction with copper sheet cladding. At the top, the building is completed by a conical roof with a lantern . The roof is supported by a steel structure and is also covered with sheet copper.
History of the Heider water supply
In the marshland areas , the water supply caused many problems because mostly only brackish water could be pumped out of the marsh well . Heide had the advantage of being on the western edge of the Geest . Even before a central supply was set up, water was extracted from 69 municipal wells in the Geest area. However, these wells mostly only supplied surface water, which was often contaminated by waste.
After a typhus epidemic in 1901, the decision was made for a central water supply with deep wells. In addition to improved hygiene, there were also promises to be made in fighting fires.
In 1902 the construction of a waterworks began in the then independent Süderholm. After its completion in 1903, two gas-powered pumps pumped the water from a depth of 60 m. A 3270 m long pipeline then led to the newly built water tower in the center of Heide.
Decommissioning, renovation and further use
After the tower was listed as a historical monument in 1978 , it was still in service until 1989 when it was taken off the grid. Modern pumps had made it superfluous.
After the waterworks sold the tower to the city, the municipality thought about renovating the dilapidated structure. Moisture had penetrated into the interior, and condensation had formed under the copper cladding, which had corroded the steel parts.
For years the search for an investor was in vain, then the city decided to take over the renovation itself. Work began in 2003. The following changes were made:
- The tower head was dismantled and the ground was renovated. Three quarters of the container were removed, a false ceiling was put in and the copper casing was renewed.
- A 71 m² room was created in the tower head.
- The number of storeys in the tower shaft was increased by inserting false ceilings. In addition, 16 additional windows were built in, as well as a stairwell and an elevator.
The renovation was completed in March 2005.
Today the city leases 180 m² of the interior space in the tower shaft as office space. The tower room is used as a wedding room and offers space for a wedding party of 25 people (as of 2009).
