Rheinfelden water tower

The Rheinfelden water tower is a decommissioned, 35 meter high water tower in the Baden-Württemberg city of Rheinfelden . The building is a landmark of the city and has housed a fool's museum since 1993.

history

In the course of the industrialization of the up-and-coming town of Rheinfelden, the "Kraftverkehrungswerke Aktiengesellschaft", which was responsible for the local central water supply at the time, built the water tower between 1898 and 1899. The structural planning is carried out by the Swiss engineering office F. Pictet. On April 12, 1938, the city bought the water supply system from the power transmission plants. The tower was used for the city's water supply until 1971. From then on, an elevated tank in the Nollingen district with a capacity of 3,000 cubic meters ensured the water supply.

After the tower was originally considered to be blown up, it was renovated in the early 1980s for 750,000 marks and has since been used by the Rheinfeld fools' guild , to which over 30 cliques belong. Various Carnival costumes can be seen in the permanent exhibition of the Narrenmuseum, which was opened in 1993 in the premises of the water tower.

description

The five-story, 35-meter-high water tower has a circular floor plan and tapers from 11.1 meters in diameter to 6.5 meters in diameter. It was built structurally in the style of the old hydropower plant in Rheinfelden in raw, light limestone blocks. Window frames and storey dividers were framed in red stones to the outer facade. The expanded basement served as an apartment for the tower keeper when the water tower was in operation . A cylindrical, dark green intze container made of metal with a capacity of 400 cubic meters is placed on the stone structure . In the lower part there is a handrail accessible from the top floor. The water reservoir is closed by a conical roof , on the top of which there is a ventilation dome with a smaller conical roof.

In the winter months, star-shaped Christmas lights are lit on each of the four sides of the water tank, the carrier element of which is permanently attached.
