The water tower of the Trenthorst-Wulmenau estate is a former water tower east of the village of Westerau in the Stormarn district (Schleswig-Holstein). The large estates were supplied with water from their own wells, some also had pumps and a water tower for intermediate storage. The location is roughly halfway between the two goods on the edge of a building complex known as the headquarters.
The construction
The 20 m high tower stands on a square floor plan of 36 m². The basement is made of field stones. The reinforced concrete structure above was provided with concrete plaster. The three floors below the container floor show three windows on each side of the building. The wall is structured by pilaster strips . The container floor, which is also structured by pilaster strips, protrudes slightly. The water tank inside has a capacity of 50 m³. At the top, the tower is closed off by a hipped roof with a beaver tail covering into which small dormers are integrated.
History
The two neighboring estates of Trenthorst and Wulmenau have always had a common owner since 1555 and are therefore still referred to as double estates today. The changing owners include the margarine manufacturer Friedrich Bölck , the Reemtsma family , the Max Planck Society and finally the Federal Republic of Germany. Since 1998 the estate has been the seat of the Institute for Organic Agriculture of the Federal Research Center for Agriculture (FAL).
The settlement between the two estates (headquarters) was sold to private in 2000. It dates from the beginning of the 20th century. In addition to the water tower, there is also the old school and the old forester's house as well as some residential buildings and stables. The water tower was completed in 1912 and served to supply drinking water until 1972 . It has been a listed building since 1985 . The tower was renovated from 2010 to 2012 and is now used privately.
