The water tower in Machtolsheim

The water tower in Machtolsheim was built between 1976 and 1978. The two-chamber tower of the Albwasserversorgungsgruppe II, based in Laichingen, holds 800 cubic meters of water and supplies Machtolsheim , Merklingen and Nellingen .

The tower is 745 meters above sea level. NN and is 37.70 meters high. From its viewing platform you have a wide view of the Alb plateau.

The historic piston pump is exhibited next to the water tower.

The Albwasserversorgungsgruppe II was founded 100 years before the start of construction on the Machtolsheim water tower. Since 1876, the water has been pumped 310 meters from the Mühlhausen pumping station in the Filstal valley to the Alb plateau. Until a few years ago, this was done with four mechanical piston pumps. These pumps were driven by two Francis spiral turbines via a belt transmission. In 2004 the conveyor system was converted to high-pressure centrifugal pumps with an electric drive. Immediately next to the water tower in Machtolsheim, one of the disused piston pumps, built in 1963, is on display.
