Vasily ( Russian Василий ) is a Russian male given name.
Origin and meaning
A number of Russian princes also carried the name Vasily. This is explained by the Greek origin of the name ( Βασιλεύς ), which means king there. In the Ukraine and Bulgaria, however, the name is abbreviated to Wassil in the national language . The Latin form of the name, which occurs primarily as a monk's name in German, is Basilius ; an English and Arabic form is basil .
