Basil is a short form of the Latin name Basilius , which is derived from the Greek name Basileus ( Βασιλεύς ) meaning " king " - possibly also via the variant Βασιλείος Basileios "the royal".

In the Arabic-speaking world, Basil ( Arabic باسل, DMG Bāsil ) means “brave”, “brave”.
