Basil Wilson Duke
Basil Wilson Duke (born May 28, 1838 in Georgetown , Scott County , Kentucky , † September 16, 1916 in New York City ) was a Brigadier General of the Confederate Army in the Civil War .
Career
Born in Kentucky in 1838, Duke went to law school after normal schooling and practiced law in St. Louis , Missouri upon admission .
When the Civil War broke out, he returned to Kentucky and joined the Lexington Rifles as 2nd Lieutenant , commanded by his brother-in-law, Brigadier General John Hunt Morgan . In 1864, after Morgan's death, he was promoted to brigadier general and took over his cavalry . In April and May 1865 he accompanied President Jefferson Davis and the Confederate government on their escape from Union forces .
After the war, Duke settled in Louisville (Kentucky), continued to work as a lawyer and as an advisor to the Louisville and Nashville Railroad . From 1880 he brought out the veteran magazine Southern Bivouac and wrote two bestsellers.
