Wassili Jegorowitsch Afonin ( Russian Василий Егорович Афонин ; born September 3, 1939 in Schirnowka , Novosibirsk Oblast , Soviet Union) is a Soviet-Russian writer. He comes from a farming family and his works are often about life and the people in the village and their problems. Since the 1970s, his stories have also been set in the city and revolve around townspeople.

Vasily Afonin left school at 15 and worked as a mechanic, electrician, stevedore and cattle herder, among other things. In 1966 he graduated from ten-year high school. He was studying law in Odessa and had difficulty completing his degree in 1971 because of a fifteen-minute speech in support of Solzhenitsyn . When the copy of A Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich was sorted out and torn up in the university library, Afonin had hidden the book under his mattress in the dormitory. He was denounced and the book was found during a search. In 1976 he became a member of the Soviet Writers' Union . Afonin lives in Tomsk in southern Russia.

In his best known work Im Moor , Afonin tells the story of the two brothers Michail and Semjon in the village of Jura in Siberia. While Semjon stayed in Jura during the war, where he was able to gain prestige and a high position, Mikhail was in the war and found himself without means. When Mikhail returned, his brother went into the moor to collect cranberries . Michail also goes to the moor. He finds the berries his brother couldn't find because he sprained a foot. There is a conflict between the brothers - one of them takes up the gun. Afonin uses the most economical means to create a story that is so dense that nothing can be left out. At the same time, the reader is drawn into a story that, despite its simplicity, is complex and understood by the Central European city dweller of the 21st century. It is therefore generally applicable.
