Wat Muang was founded in the Mueang Wiset Chan ( เมือง วิเศษ ชาญ ) during the Ayutthaya period - around 1690 . Mueang Wiset Chan was a flourishing city until in 1767 the capital Ayutthaya , the surrounding cities and temples in the Siamese-Burmese War 1764–1769 was destroyed by the Burmese.

On December 8, 1982, the monk Luang Pho Kasem ( หลวง พ่อ เกษม , also known as Ajahn Suko, อาจารย์ สุ โก ) discovered the ruins of the temple, which had been neglected for over 200 years. He decided to build a new temple on this site. Construction began the following year. Luang Pho Kasem died on March 7, 2001.
