Wadden high

The Vlieländer Wattenhoch

In the Wadden Sea, a wadden high refers to the line between an island and the mainland, which is highest and therefore the first to dry out at low tide or the last to be flooded at high tide . A wadden high lies between the coast and the offshore island . Him meet at the rising tide by the Seegatten accruing the island from two water masses in running off water, the water runs accordingly from Watt high in two different directions back through the Seegatten. The Wadden High is thus a watershed in the Wadden Sea.

Since the water flowing from two sides into the area between the island and the coast meets at the wadden high when the water rushes, there is only a slight current here . As a result, suspended matter can sediment particularly easily , which is the cause of the wadden high.

meaning

shipping

In shipping, it is very important to know where a high mudflat is located in order to be able to determine in which direction the water is flowing up or down.

East Frisian Islands (with Wangerooge and Spiekeroog in the east)

For example, if a sailing yacht travels from Wangerooge to Spiekeroog when the water is running out (ebb) , the current is favorable for the sailing yacht, as the running water between Wangerooge and the mainland flows through the Dove Harle lake, which runs between Wangerooge and Spiekeroog, towards the open North Sea and the yacht drag with you. The moment the sailing yacht crosses the lake between Wangerooge and Spiekeroog, the current has an unfavorable effect, because the water masses between Spiekeroog and the mainland also flow through the Dove Harle in the direction of the open North Sea, so the sailing yacht now has to go against the current approach. After the sailing yacht has driven along Spiekeroog for some time, it reaches the Spiekerooger Wattenhoch. At this point the current changes, the masses of water between Spiekeroog and the mainland now flow through the Schillbalje , the lake between Spiekeroog and Langeoog, towards the open North Sea. The current is now favorable again for the sailing yacht until it reaches the destination port.

Mudflat walks

Wadden highs are also of great importance for mudflat hikers. On some islands it is possible to walk from the mainland to the island over a dry mudflat when the tide is low.

Accurate location

In German nautical charts , the positions of the wadden highs can be roughly determined using the depth information.

In Dutch, wadden highs are called Wantij (pl .: Wantijen, lit. "bad tide") and are entered as a line on Dutch nautical charts.
