Waughton Castle

Waughton Castle is the ruin of a low castle about 5 km north of East Linton and about 3 km west of Whitekirk in the Scottish administrative division of East Lothian . The 14th century ruin is a Scheduled Monument .

architecture

Waughton Castle was a Hofburg, but only part of one wing remains today. The ruins are located on a rock terrace that is about 5 meters higher than the surrounding terrain to the south and west. The remains consist of a small tower in the southwest corner, which was built from quarry stone with ashlar cladding and is still around 7.5 meters high today. The details of a narrow window in the south wall suggest that this is a 16th century building. A wall with a building on the corner was erected east and north of the rock, but it is believed to be of a later date. There are partially man-made stairs up the rock. There is also a pigeon house on the site .

history

Inside of the ruins

A document from 1395 mentions a country house in "Walchtoun". The castle belonged to the Hepburn family . In 1547 it was sacked by the English . Subsequently, when it was in the hands of the Laird of Carmichael , it was again attacked by the expropriated Hepburns. The Hepburns legally regained the castle and kept it until Alexander Cockburn bought it from John Hepburn . In the 18th century, building blocks from the castle were reused to build walls and farms in the area.
