The Wawayanda Lake is a less than two kilometer long lake in the US state of New Jersey. It is considered one of the main attractions of Wawayanda State Park , which is located in Passaic County . The lake has an area of more than one square kilometer.

The lake is used for various sports. There is a guarded sandy beach for swimming, a boat dock where you can launch your own boats and the possibility of renting different boats. Trout and salmon are used in the lake, as well as some other fish species that are released for fishing for visitors with a fishing permit.

history

The area around Wawayanda Lake was historically one of the hunting and fishing grounds of the Lenni Lenape Indian tribe , who were assigned to the Wolf Klan because they carried a wolf in the totem of their clan . During the American Revolutionary War , a group of Lenni Lenape who supported George Washington , led by their chief Black Eagle , is said to have camped near the lake.

The first records of the area around the lake date back to 1683 and document a transfer of the land to the Earl of Perth . It is known from the beginning of the 19th century that a sawmill was operated near the lake. Between 1830 and 1840 the land was sold to speculators interested in the ore deposits. As a result, iron ore was mined and melted down on site. In this context, a dam was built at the northern end of the lake and a town called Double Pond was built. The village no longer exists today and the only relic that can still be seen today is a stone furnace.
