Waygaard

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Waygaard ( Danish : Vejgaard or partly also Vadgård , Frisian : Waiguurd ) is a district of the municipality of Dagebüll in the Bökingharde . On January 1, 1978, the place was incorporated into the municipality of Dagebüll. With around 60 inhabitants, it is the smallest district in the municipality.

history

Waygaard was a Hallig in Dagebüller Bay before 1574 . This can still be seen today in the settlement structure. It is shaped in the place itself and the surrounding area by various terps .

Until 1577 the place was made land-proof with the construction of a sea dike.

The current settlement structure of Waygaards consists of

  • the Großwarft Süder-Waygaard (Danish Sønder Vejgaard ),
  • Norder-Waygaard ( Nørre-Vejgaard ),
  • Waygaard dike ( Vejgaarddige ) and
  • Bollhaus ( Bolhuse ).

There are also some not elevated houses around.

Etymology of the place name

The etymology of local place name research has not been clarified beyond doubt. The place name Waygaard is said to go back to the Frisian first name Weig . With gaard (Danish for yard) a larger single farmstead is described. Weiggaard therefore means either Weigs Hof or Hof, Edelhof am Weg .

According to another assumption, the place name goes back to the word Wai (North Frisian for way ).

Infrastructure

Children living on site initially mainly attend the elementary school in Lindholm. The closest secondary schools are in Niebüll .

Waygaard had its own bakery shop until the mid-1990s.

Even after the incorporation, an independent volunteer fire brigade was retained on site .

A locally based sports club is TSV Dagebüll-Ockholm . It goes back to TSV Fahretoft / Waygaard.

State road 6 runs through Waygaard-Deich from the Danish border to federal road 5 in Ost-Bordelum .
