Wayne Gould

Wayne Gould (高 樂 德 法官) (born July 3, 1945 in Hawera , New Zealand ) is a former judge who is responsible for the spread of Sudoku in Europe and America.

Wayne Gould was born on July 3, 1945, the son of a bank manager. He was a lawyer in Matamata, New Zealand for 13 years before moving to Hong Kong in 1982 . In 1993 Gould was appointed presiding district judge there. He retired immediately after China took over Hong Kong on July 1, 1997.

During a stay in Japan in the same year, Gould discovered a Sudoku book in a bookstore in Tokyo. Although he didn't speak Japanese, he was fascinated and decided to spread Sudoku in Europe and America as well. He spent the next six years developing a computer program called “Pappocom Sudoku” that produced new Sudokus at the push of a button. In September 2004, Gould published his first Sudoku in the Conway Daily Sun . His breakthrough came after his Sudokus were published in the Times on November 15, 2004. Gould became a multi-millionaire through the sale of Sudoku books and his software. His books alone sold over 4 million times (as of 2006).

Gould was named in Time Magazine 's 2006 World's Most Influential People list .

Gould is married and has two children. He is the brother of former British politician Bryan Gould.
