In the 2000 Olympic Games in the Australian city of Sydney in were beach volleyball tournaments held for women and men.

mode

The mode was the same for women and men.

24 teams competed in the first round. The winners of the twelve games qualified for the round of 16. The losers in the first round completed two more knockout rounds. The three winners and the best loser completed the field in the round of 16. From there, the knockout system continued until the final. Up to and including the semi-finals, one set of up to 15 points was played, the game for third place and the final consisted of two sets of up to twelve points.

The Bondi Beach hosted the competitions in beach volleyball

The games were played from September 16 to 26. The venue was the Beach Volleyball Center on Bondi Beach . In the run-up to the Olympic Games, the stadium was criticized as residents and surfers were concerned about Australia's most famous beach.

First round

Ahmann / Hager reached the round of 16 against the Spanish duo Bosma / Diez, while the second German duo Oetke / Scheuerpflug failed against the US team Blanton / Fonoimoana. The Swiss Laciga brothers and the Austrians Berger / Stamm also won their first game. Brazil and Canada brought both teams straight to the last sixteen.

Final round

The round of 16 took place on September 22nd, the quarter-finals and the semi-finals followed two days later. The medal games were played on September 26th.

Jörg Ahmann and Axel Hager were only stopped in the semi-finals by the Brazilians Zé Marco / Ricardo, who had just won against Berger / Stamm in the second round. The Germans then won the bronze medal against Maia / Brenha from Portugal and thus ensured the DVV's greatest success so far in Olympic beach volleyball. The Laciga brothers finished fifth after losing to Maia / Brenha in the quarter-final.

Ulrike Schmidt and Gudula Staub narrowly prevailed against the Chinese duo Zhang / Tian. Maike Friedrichsen and Danja Müsch, on the other hand, were defeated by the French Prawerman / Rigaux and had to make the losers' group. Brazil and the USA qualified directly for the second round with both teams.

Final round

The round of 16 took place on September 21, the quarter-finals and the semi-finals followed two days later. The medal games were played on September 25th.

The two German duos were eliminated in the round of 16 and thus finished ninth. Schmidt / Staub lost to the Italian duo Bruschini / Solazzi and Friedrichsen / Müsch against Adriana Behar / Shelda. The Brazilians then reached the final, which the Australians Cook / Pottharst won. Sandra Pires / Adriana Samuel won the second medal for Brazil in the tournament for third place.
