Saint-Léonard-des-Bois is a French commune with 472 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Sarthe in the region Pays de la Loire between Paris and Rennes . It belongs to the Arrondissement of Mamers and the canton of Sillé-le-Guillaume . The residents call themselves Saint Léonardais and Saint Léonardaises .

Saint-Léonard-des-Bois is located in the northwest of the Sarthe department, in the north and west it borders on the Mayenne department and in the north-east a little bit on the Orne department. The center of the village lies in a small valley, which is enclosed by mountains and forests. It belongs to the Normandy-Maine Regional Nature Park .

Population development

Saint-Léonard had 1,500 inhabitants in 1731, by 1821 the population had risen to 1,808. After that, the population fell again until it reached a low of 497 in 1990. By 2011 the population had increased again slightly to 541 inhabitants.

politics

The general councilor for the canton of Fresnay-sur-Sarthe , which also includes Saint-Léonard, is the mayoress of Fresnay-sur-Sarthe Fabienne Labrette-Ménager ( UMP ). In the National Assembly , Saint-Léonard is represented by the MEP from the first constituency of the Département Sarthe Françoise Dubois ( PS ).

Political tendencies

Politically, Saint-Léonard is strongly conservative, with the UMP and RPR candidates getting well over 55% in the presidential and parliamentary elections.

In the regional council and cantonal elections, the UMP always received a clear majority, with voter turnouts of over 50%, in the cantonal election of 2008 even over 80%.

The population of Saint-Léonard is critical of Europe, in 2004 the PS received more votes than the UMP, with a turnout of 48.06%. In 2009 the UMP achieved the best result with a turnout of only 42.6%, in 2014 there was a slightly better turnout of 54.86%, but the FN received the best result with 29.81%. Both treaties, the Maastricht Treaty and the Treaty establishing a Constitution for Europe , were rejected by a majority of the population, with voter turnouts around 70%.

The last local elections ( élections municipales ) in Saint-Léonard-des-Bois took place on March 23, 2014 . There were 30 candidates for the first ballot, 13 of which received an absolute majority of the votes in the first ballot. Since the municipal council ( conseil minicipal ) has 15 seats, a second ballot was necessary, two of the 17 candidates for the second ballot received an absolute majority.
