history
In the early years of the 19th century, swimming on Sydney's beaches was controversial. Convicts were banned from swimming in Sydney Harbor because of the sharks, stingrays and "decency". Bathing became popular in the 1830s, although it was officially banned from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. In the mid-19th century, families went to Bondi Beach for picnics. The first tram reached Bondi Beach in 1884. The Waverley Council built the first protecting the surfer around 1903 to 1929 were about 60,000 people on average the beach on summer weekends, and was opened as the pavilion, there were 200,000. Since 1930, this beach has not only been used by people from Sydney to relax, but also by visitors from the rest of Australia and overseas.
In addition to the lifeguards, the Bondi Icebergs Swimming Club was established in 1929 , which humorously developed the culture of Bondi Beach in the winter months.
In 1938, Black Sunday happened on Bondi Beach when there were 35,000 people on the beach and a large group of lifeguards held a swimming contest during which three huge waves washed over the beach and hundreds of people were driven out into the sea. During the largest lifesaving operation on a beach that was started, more than 250 people were saved. Five people drowned.
The beach
There are other beaches in Sydney further south of Bondi Beach. Surf Life Saving Australia gives the northern part of the beach a harmless 4 on the danger scale from 1 to 10, and the southern part a 7 due to multiple surf back currents. The closest to the beach is the “Backpackers Rip”. In summer Bondi Beach shares a network of groves with the southern beaches.
Every year, the beach is the destination of the 14-kilometer city-to-surf run with 80,000 participants recently, which starts in downtown Sydney. The Flickerfest , Australia's most important short film festival , takes place on the beach in January, Sculpture by the Sea since 1996 in October / November, the Bondi Beach Markets are open every Sunday. The beach is particularly popular with British tourists as a Christmas destination in the Australian summer.
In the Olympic year 2000 the beach volleyball competitions took place here. For this, the organizers built a temporary stadium with 10,000 seats, a smaller stadium, two warm-up and three training areas. In the meantime, however, playing all ball games is prohibited on Bondi Beach, which has caused great resentment among the population.
Festivals such as the Australian Surf Carnival are also held at Bondi Beach .
