Membrane-like stenoses of the esophagus , which can be congenital or acquired, are referred to as web . The acquired form occurs, for example, with reflux from the stomach or after radiation. The web is usually found in the upper part of the esophagus and narrows the lumen from the front.
Difficulty swallowing occurs and chunks of food can be trapped. In the X-ray Pap swallow examination , the web can occasionally produce a jet phenomenon .
The therapy can usually be carried out endoscopically.
