Webster Eugene Howard , called Web, (born May 19, 1934 in Winthrop , Massachusetts ) is an American solid-state physicist.

Howard studied physics at Carnegie-Mellon University (Bachelor in 1955) and at Harvard University with a master's degree in 1956 and a doctorate in 1962. From 1963 to 1993 he was a scientist at the Thomas J. Watson Research Center at IBM (and from 1961 at IBM) . In 1993 he became director of the High Resolution Technology department at Bell Laboratories (ATT Global Manufacturing and Engineering). From 2001 to 2002 he was Vice President and Chief Technology Officer of eMAGIN Corporation. He is a consultant to Electronic Display Technology.

He was a member of the Scientific Council of Thomson SA. He was a member of the IBM Academy of Technology.

He was one of the physicists who succeeded in demonstrating quantum effects during electron transport in two-dimensional geometries of metal-insulator-semiconductor (MOS) structures at IBM in 1966 (with Frank Fang , Alan B. Fowler , Phillip J. Stiles ) and he contributed Frank Stern shortly afterwards the theoretical explanation.

Since 1973 he has dealt with screen technologies, including plasma screens , electroluminescence thin films, cathode ray tubes (CRTs) and screens with thin film transistors and liquid crystals (which led to the DTI project, a joint venture between IBM and Toshiba ).

In 1981 he received the Franklin Institute's Wetherill Medal with Fowler, Fang, Stiles and Stern. He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society , the IEEE, and the Society for Information Display, of which he was President.
